Juleps for horses

The Mint Julep is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, if you don’t know that by now, you must be sipping on rum, gin or cheap beer.

Monday, the Julep will take center stage at Churchill Downs where a special Julep cup with a new design is unveiled.

It is no ordinary cup.

This cup is designed by Tiffany & Co. and is part of Brown-Forman/Wood Reserve’s effort to raise awareness and funding for The Heart of a Horse Foundation.

The $1,000 cups will be sold only at Churchill Downs and only on Kentucky Derby day.

The Heart of a Horse Foundation works to help rescue neglected horses or support horses in need. For example the organization provides grants for emergency hay support and emergency medicine services. The organization is also involved in emergency rescues and retirement programs according to the non-profit’s Web site.

You might consider setting aside some of your betting money for this worthy cause, or you could pour some of your winnings on Oaks or Derby day to take home a pair of these cups. They’ll last a lifetime.

Check back on Monday for a photo of the cup’s new design.

If you been sipping that rum, gin or cheap beer, here’s a video to help you make a Mint Julep.
